“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.” Deuteronomy 6:5-6
I grew up on the North side of Chicago so I was supposed to be a Cubs fan. I am a White Sox fan. This was a geographical no-no so how did this come about? My dad and mom both loved the White Sox. They took me to White Sox games, put the games on tv, got me White Sox gear, and I was hooked. Their passion and love for the White Sox overflowed from their heart and I caught it.
A similar thing can already be seen happening with my young daughter Nora. My wife and I both love the outdoors and animals. I can see this love being passed on to Nora as she excitedly gets ready for walks and points out the animals while imitating their sounds.
Our children watch us very closely. They notice how we spend our time. They see what we get excited about. They can tell what we love based on these observations.
In Deuteronomy 6 before God calls us to boldly share our faith with our children daily and often, He calls us to love Him and His Word with everything we have. For He is worthy and He knows that when we give God our all we will see how awesome it is to love and to be loved by the Lord.
What’s more is that when our love for God overflows from our heart our children will recognize that. They will hear it in how we talk about Jesus. They will see it in how we love God and neighbor. When it is authentic and passionate it gets to be contagious! We Christian parents are in the same boat- we desperately desire that our kids will grow up to love and follow the Lord! The best way to help them is to start in our own hearts. By loving God with all we have, we put ourselves in a great place to make our love contagious.
While I hope my kids like the White Sox, I desperately desire that they love the Lord! I pray that God will help me to love Him with all my heart, soul, and might and that this love may become contagious to my children and to others! May the Lord bless us as we seek to love Him and to pass on our love to our children!
